The 140th Anniversary Commemoration of the Kiriji Peace Treaty has received a major royal boost as His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, takes centre stage as host of the historic event.
The development followed a courtesy engagement with the Olubadan, where representatives of the Kiriji Heritage Conservation Foundation formally presented the vision and significance of the anniversary celebration to the revered monarch.
Oba Ladoja warmly received the initiative and expressed support for the commemoration, which seeks to preserve Yoruba history, promote peace, and remind present and future generations of the importance of unity among Yoruba people.
The Kiriji Peace Treaty remains one of the most important peace agreements in Yoruba history, symbolising the end of years of conflict and the beginning of reconciliation among Yoruba communities under the principle of “No Victor, No Vanquished.”
According to the Foundation, hosting the anniversary in Ibadan under the royal presence of the Olubadan is historically significant, given Ibadan’s central role in the events surrounding the Kiriji War and the peace process that followed.
The commemoration will feature a symposium, cultural displays, goodwill messages, historical reflections, and a symbolic re-enactment of the treaty.
The event is scheduled to hold on Monday, September 21, 2026, at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, with the theme: “140 Years of Peace, Unity and Yoruba Heritage: Reflecting on the Legacy of the Kiriji Peace Treaty.”
The Kiriji Heritage Conservation Foundation said the programme will bring together traditional rulers, scholars, policymakers, cultural stakeholders, youth representatives, and members of the Yoruba diaspora to reflect on peace, leadership, unity, and heritage preservation.
With the Olubadan taking centre stage as host, the Foundation noted that the anniversary is expected to serve as a powerful reminder of Yoruba resilience, reconciliation, and shared identity.
